National School Lunch and Breakfast Program
Chartwells Menu Development Guiding Principles
Nutritious meals are the foundation of any healthy eating plan and the school breakfast and lunch meals remain the cornerstone of all school based child nutrition programs.
Chartwells menus are designed to meet the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for the following key nutrients:
  • Calories
  • Protein
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin D

In addition, the 2005 US Dietary Guideline recommendations are incorporated into Chartwells menu planning in the following ways:
  • No more than 30% calories from fat
  • No more than 10% calories from saturated fat
  • Minimize trans fats, sodium, and cholesterol
  • Maximize dietary fiber
  • Promote whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and low fat dairy choices
  • Balanced Choices®
Chartwells has mapped out an approach to a wellness partnership, called Balanced Choices, our signature comprehensive approach to the health and well-being of students. Our program addresses snacks, beverages, meals and vending.

This program assists students in making the most nutritious meal, snack, beverages and vending choices. We offer a cutting edge solution and attractively promote “better-for-you” choices at all of our school locations.
    Chartwells Breakfast Programs
Brake for Breakfast and Morning Editions
The results are in… children who eat breakfast perform better in school. Research shows that children who eat a healthy breakfast show increased attention at school, visit the nurse less often, and have lower rates of tardiness and absenteeism.

Because of these overwhelming statistics in favor of school breakfast, Chartwells invites our youngest customers to "Brake for Breakfast" with us and get fueled for the day! We greet our older students with more upscale service and selections from our "Morning Editions" breakfast menu.

    Creature Cafe©
The elementary school program, Pyramid Pete's Creature Cafe, is our unique and innovative way of enhancing meal times for our youngest guests by offering contemporary good tasting, wholesome food. Pyramid Pete, our loveable dinosaur, and his group of creature friends, who represent the five food groups, help guide students through their daily dining experience utilizing key nutrition messages.
    Profiles in Good Taste
It is our goal to enhance the dining experience for our secondary school students by creating a fun destination in school where they can take a break from their busy day and socialize with friends. Our "Profiles in Good Taste" food stations bring a more retail look and feel to our school meal program by concentrating on the principles of food quality, variety, freshness, and presentation.
